How to take care of wooden holds

The use of wooden holds has its own peculiarities. One of these is maintenance.

With plastic holds, it's pretty straightforward - just soak them in a bucket, clean them off with a high-pressure cleaner and that's it.

Wooden holds require more maintenance, but on the other hand a well maintained wooden hold might last longer than a plastic one and can still look like new after a few years. Unlike plastic holds, which will lose their grip over time, a wooden holds will retain its properties even after a long time. Wood is just wood :).

How to maintain wooden holds:

1) Remove the hold from the wall and check that it is not cracked or damaged.

2) Wipe the hold thoroughly with a damp cloth and allow to dry immediately at room temperature.

3) Any stains from climbing shoes can be removed with fine sandpaper (120 grit recommended).

Voila - you've got a hold that looks (almost) as good as new!

Double-check that all the washers are in place and re-glue with instant glue if necessary.

What not to do:

Never expose the holds to prolonged moisture, do not dry them in direct sunlight as they can crack.

Here's an example of what a little work with a wet cloth and sandpaper can do to a hold that has been in use for several years:
